PROMOTE GOOD DIGESTION – THE 3 TYPES OF SALIVA
Truthfully, they aren’t really 3 types of saliva, as there are 3 separate glands for the secretion of saliva in the mouth. These 3 salivary glands send saliva by way of ducts to the mouth. The partoid gland, the sublingual glands and the submandibular glands. The last two open under the tongue, the first is on the inside of your cheeks. You can feel the opening for them if you use your tongue to feel for small flaps on the inside of your cheek and under your tongue. Saliva is a solution of water and mucus*. However, what’s most important is that with the water and mucus, is a very important enzyme called ‘amylase’. This is the enzyme that helps to digest all carbohydrates (grains, vegetables, beans, fruits, potatoes etc.) Why am I telling you this? For most of the food we eat, digestion begins in the mouth… so… if we don’t chew our food to mix it with the digestive enzymes, the stomach has trouble digesting carbohydrates. That is because the food didn’t get to fully go through the first stage of digestion – which should have started in the mouth.
So what’s the solution?
1. Food must be chewed until liquid before it’s swallowed.
2. Trying chewing 30 times before swallowing
3. If drinking smoothies, or vegetable juices, give a swish in the mouth before swallowing
Chewing food until liquid before swallowing is so important, otherwise, much of the ‘good food’ you are eating, may end up as waste in the colon if the body could not break it down properly. So, that expensive Kale & spinach salad you ate… just became an expensive bowel movement instead 🙂
