SUPPLEMENTS…To take or not to take?
According to CBC News, “as many as three out of four Canadians use natural health products. From herbal remedies to minerals, vitamins and other supplements, it’s a billion dollar industry..” In fact, annual sales in Canada in 2015 reached 1.4 Billion Dollars.  So the question is, do we really need supplements?  Should we all be taking a multi-vitamin? What about B12 for vegans or Omega’s to give our brain a boost and skin a good shine?  From experience in the health industry for over 20 years, here’s what I think you should know.

1.  ABSORPTION: Most supplements – unless listed as “whole food’, have a lot of fillers and less than 25% of what is listed on the bottle is actually absorbed into your system. Many of us are spending money on supplements that is literally just going down the toilet.

2. SHOULD WE BE TAKING MULTIVITAMINS DAILY?  Supplements are good for speedy healing but should not be part of daily living.  We should be getting our nutrients from our food.  Yes, I know our soil is badly depleted of nutrients, but by following a plant-based diet and eating on the right ‘routine’ you can actually meet your daily nutrient needs. By taking a Vitamin C supplement daily or Garlic etc, you actually weaken your immune system.  Take these only when or if you feel a cold coming on.  Your Omegas should be received into the body through food, like flax, chia, soy etc.  We do not need to be taking fish oils as a supplement daily if you are eating right – unless recommended by a health practitioner due to health issues.

3 .IS THERE EVER A TIME TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS?
Yes, most definitely!  When I do my 30-90 day programs with clients, I almost always recommend 1 or more different supplements depending on their health issues.  As mentioned, a quality supplement is good for speedy healing, but should never be taken for more than 6 months at a time.

4.  B12 / IRON FOR VEGAN’S / VEGETARIANS??
Generally not needed.  I say ‘generally’ because if you are eating right on a plant based diet, and I’m not just talking about the food, but at the right intervals of time, you should not need either.  I’ve been a vegan for over 20 years and my B12 levels are perfect and my iron is good.  I do not supplement at all.

CONCLUSION OF THE MATTER:
By following the NEW START meal plan, you should not be lacking in either Iron or B12, Or any other nutrient for that matter.  For now, just know that supplements are a great way to quick start some much needed healing, but should not be part of daily living.  Eating a plant-based diet, complete with whole foods, 2 big meals a day and a light 3rd if needed, will ensure you are getting most all the nutrients you need.
