ALMONDS Why a mighty nut? First let me preface this by stating that ‘variety’ is the key to a healthy life style. So you don’t want to stick to just eating one type of any kind of food. That being said, if there were one nut you were going to eat more then the others, raw almonds, would be a great choice.
They are lower in fat then most other nuts, but also loaded with calcium, protein & potassium which is good for over all health. Almonds also contain arginine, magnesium, copper and manganese, heart-loving minerals that also help to lower the LDL (bad cholesterol) in your system, strengthen bones and muscles. This mighty nut also helps to remove stubborn plaque build up on artery walls.
Oh, but there’s more, almonds contain riboflavin and L-carnitin- brain-loving minerals that help to keep you sharp and can increase your cognitive abilities. But probably the most impressive nutrient in almonds is the vitamin E is contains. Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant repairing damaged cells due to free radical damage and blood acidity that could lead to many diseases including cancer. BUT before you reach for those raw almonds, do know that in North America, all almonds are pasteurized – even though they are labeled raw.
Are they still beneficial? Yes, to some degree. However, after being heated, they have definitely lost some of their nutrient density. Good news!
